Before WWII, there were two major clubs in Lille: Olympique Lillois and Sporting Club Fivois. In 1944 the two clubs merged to form Lille Olympique Sporting Club. Some of the most notable achievements in the LOSC Lille stats are from their first decade.
Lille won the first division title in 1946 and completed a double that year, with a Coupe de win. Lille won three consecutive Coupe de titles and five within 10 years. They also won the league in 1954 but were relegated for the first time in 1956.
Les Dogues languished in the mid-table of the second division for a while. Eventually, they got relegated a second time, losing their professional status. It was feared that the club would disappear altogether, as they suffered financial stress. The city of Lille gave the club a large loan, and community also helped to save them from peril.
Lille returned to the top division in the late 70s and finished in sixth place in the 1978-79 season. In the 80s, Les Dogues were unable to compete with ’s best teams in the top tier. However, they did find some success in cup competitions with semifinal appearances in the Coupe de in 1983 and 1985.
In the mid-90s, Lille were once again threatened by bankruptcy and got relegated in 1997. The club was sold in 1999 and returned to Ligue 1 in the new millennium. Lille finished in third place in 2001 and qualified for the Champions League for the first time.
In 2004, Lille won their first European trophy in the Intertoto Cup. They reached the last 16 of the following-season’s UEFA Cup as well. One of the most significant achievements in the Lille team stats is their league and their Coupe de double in 2011. They emphatically ended their 56-year domestic trophy drought, and were back in the UCL.
The rest of the 2010s were up and down for Lille. They nearly got themselves relegated in 2017-18, but finished second in the following season. Out of the blue and completely outperforming their PSG in 2021. With some of Lille’s best players headed out the exit door in the 2022-23 offseason, some really sound betting advice would suggest being cautious.
