The Italian Serie A has 20 teams who compete in a double round-robin season with home and away matches vs every other team. The Serie A standings are organized like this: no points are awarded for a loss, one point is given for a draw and three points for a win. Because no extra time is played in any league match, the 90-minute result is final. Check out the updated standings for this Serie A 2022-2023 season.

Understanding Serie A Standings

In late May, the side with the most points in the standings wins the Scudetto. In the table, ties are broken by head-to-head points, then goal difference. Serie A’s promotion/relegation structure is unique among the top five leagues.

Each season, the bottom three teams in Serie A are relegated to Serie B for next year. The top two teams in the Serie B standings are then promoted to Serie A. The third-place team in Serie B is automatically promoted if they finish 10 or more points ahead of the fourth-place team. If not, anywhere from two to six teams within a 14-point margin of third place will contest a playoff to determine the third and final team promoted to Serie A.

Late on in the season, Serie A scores and standings are important for a myriad of reasons. The teams near the bottom of the table are primarily trying to avoid relegation. Teams near the top compete for the title and also European qualification. The top-six teams in Serie A play in UEFA competitions next season based on league position.

In Serie A, like the Europa League if they’re outside of the top-five.

There are a lot of factors in the equation, but point spreads often take the standings into for a given matchup.
