Pittsburgh Pirates fans haven’t had a lot to be excited about this season. The team is 23-26 and 5.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. However, Paul Skenes, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, has helped energize the Pittsburgh faithful after just two starts. His first start of the year was a little rocky, but he bounced back with six hitless innings in his second start. The Paul Skenes stats show 10 innings pitched, three runs allowed, and 18 strikeouts. The Pirates are still taking it easy with Skenes. That was evident when they removed him last start after throwing six hitless innings.
Skenes’ college career took off after he transferred to LSU from Air Force. It’s not that his two years with the Falcons were bad. It’s more a matter of things falling into place with the Tigers. In his lone season at LSU, the Paul Skenes stats show a 13-2 record with a 1.69 ERA. He struck out 209 hitters in 122 2/3 innings, which helped him go No. 1 overall to the Pirates in 2023.
Pittsburgh didn’t let Skenes pitch much in 2023. He started five games with three different teams but was typically held to an inning or two. For the year, he pitched just 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. He had a poor start at AA Altoona, which distorted his stats a bit. He finished with a 5.40 ERA for the season.

Rookie Season With Pittsburgh
Skenes has generated plenty of noise from his time with the LSU Tigers and his stint with Indianapolis this year. As a result, the Chicago Cubs. The Paul Skenes stats weren’t great from his debut, allowing three runs and six hits in four innings. He did strike out seven and the Pirates held on for a 10-9 victory. Skenes didn’t pitch long enough to earn a decision.
Skenes was -110 at home against Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs on May 17, when he mowed Chicago hitters down with 11 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed one walk and no hits.
After his fast start, Skenes found his way on the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
