Former First-Round Pick Joey Gallo Closing in on 200 Career Home Runs

Since Joey Gallo broke into the majors in 2015 at the age of 21, there have been plenty of home runs and strikeouts when looking at the Joey Gallo stats.

Playing for his fourth franchise in the last three seasons, it is more of the same for the player who has played more than 70% of his games in the outfield.

Gallo is tied for the lead for the American League Central Division-leading Minnesota Twins with 11 home runs and among Minnesota players with at least 100 at-bats, he also has the best slugging percentage.

Going back in time, if you take away his 15 walks, he struck out more often than he put the ball in play as a rookie.

That hasn’t changed over the years as 44% of his official at-bats have resulted in strikeouts.

The three times that Gallo played at least 140 games, he finished with 41, 40, and 38 home runs. He also struck out 196, 207, and 213 times in those seasons.

The MLB odds list Gallo and the Twins fifth in the odds to win the American League pennant.

Bringing the Power

Gallo displayed his raw power during his rookie season as six of his 22 hits were home runs and nearly half of his hits went for extra bases. He blasted at least 40 home runs in each of his first two full seasons in the majors. Those are the most positive of the Joey Gallo stats.

Gallo is 35th among active players with 188 career home runs. He has a home run in every 15.96 plate appearances during his nine New York Yankees who homers more frequently than Gallo with a HR in every 14.1 plate appearances.

Gallo burst onto the scene in 2012 when playing for two lower-level teams in the Texas Rangers system, he hit 22 home runs in 59 games. Gallo hit 40 home runs in the minors in 2013 and 42 more in 2014.

Struggling for Consistency

Gallo’s career batting average fell under .200 due to some struggles in June.

He is batting .188 this season. If that holds up, it would be the fourth season in a row that he finished with a batting average under .200.

Gallo has struck out 71 times and put the ball in play on 89 occasions. That is a better ratio than he has had in some of his other seasons.

Gallo has missed 21 games so far this season as he was sidelined for nearly two weeks in April and missed more time in early June so that should keep him from finishing with more than 200 strikeouts in a season for the third time.

Another Postseason for Gallo?

If the playoffs began today, Minnesota would be on the field as the American League Central Division champions.

If that happens, he would make it into the postseason for the third season in a row, all with different teams.

Of course, his postseason experience is somewhat limited as he was 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his lone game for the New York Yankees against rival Boston in 2021. In the 2022 National League Division Series, he appeared in one game for the San Diego Padres and did not have a plate appearance.

A Look at the Splits

Seven games into the season, Gallo was batting .304 with four home runs. Is this the year when he was going to do more than just hit balls out of the park?

The answer is no. He finished April hitting .226 in the month. In May, the number dipped to .165 and he is at .154 in June.

Taking a closer look at the numbers, he has a .409 average on the first pitch of an at-bat and a .364 mark with an 0-1 count. However, he is just 3-for-46 with 35 strikeouts when he faces either an 0-2 or 1-2 count.

Seven of his home runs came with Gallo batting seventh for the Rangers. He has a .189 average with runners in scoring position. When looking at the MLB schedule, Gallo has had success at home with a .202 batting average and .461 slugging percentage compared to marks of .169 and .437 in road games.

More than Just a Hitter

For those looking at the Joey Gallo stats and focusing in on the strikeouts and home runs, it might be worth ing that Gallo won back-to-back gold gloves in the outfield in 2020 and 2021.

In 28 games in the outfield, most of them coming in left field, he has two errors.

Gallo has seen time at first base and at all three outfield positions so far with the Twins.
