2023 Golf Betting Preview & Analysis: Major Tournaments

Majors Dominate Golf Betting Markets

Our 2023 Golf Betting Preview looks at where the money is going for all the major golf tournaments.

The majors attract the most money throughout the year, which kicks off with the 2023 Masters at Augusta. The Green Jacket is something every golfer wants to win, so it’s always a highly-contested betting market.

McIlroy Tops Masters Market

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy has been best-backed to win the 2023 Masters Tournament. He’s paying +800 and he’s one of the golfers with the best chance to win the Masters.

Despite having not won a major since 2014, McIlroy has attracted attention to win the Masters in April and it’s a course he has played well.

He had an excellent chance to win earlier in this career before playing terribly in the final round. He’s out to avenge that performance and bettors expect him to play well.

“Looking to score a minor upset are Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler. They are all quoted at +1400 or lower, so expectations are high.”

Scheffler burst onto the scene with his win in 2022 PGA Tournament, and although he hasn’t won a tournament since, the Masters is usually a horses-for-courses type of tournament.

Golf betting stats suggest one of those four golfers have a good chance of winning. Due to the limited field size, there is rarely a huge upset.

Thomas Eyes Third PGA

All eyes are on Thomas in the PGA Championship. The American is a two-time and defending PGA Championship champion, so we’re not surprised by the Golf betting odds.

Our 2023 golf betting preview expects Thomas to be in contention at Oak Hill, and given his two impressive wins at the PGA, he is the deserving favorite.

Money has come in for Thomas since he won in crazy circumstances in 2022. He’s the +1000 favorite alongside Rahm. McIlroy is +1200 and there are 10 golfers at +2000 or lower.

Thomas could be an integral part of Team USA’s Ryder Cup success. It’s happening in September and USA is currently -200 to win.

His record at the Ryder Cup is exceptional, so Thomas, along with his teammates, will be tough to beat against Europe in the team competition.

It’s one of the 2023 golf betting preview highlights for the year, but Europe’s Viktor Hovland is not looking forward to playing the course.

“It is a bit disappointing, I must say,”
“I’m not a fan of the design of the track itself.
“It is up and down a large mountain, so it will be difficult to walk. Honestly, I think people will struggle to play 36 holes, and especially the caddies.” Hovland said

Scheffler Could Top Money List

Betting on the PGA Tour money list is always interesting in trying to determine which golfers will play the most.

McIlroy is the +230 favorite but we’re unsure how many tournaments he will play outside the US Open, which could leave him vulnerable. Therefore, we’re locking in Scheffler to win the 2023 PGA Tour money list.

He is the best bet given his output and we think he could win multiple times in 2023, so our 2023 golf betting preview expects big things from the four-time PGA Tour winner.

He could get his year off to a big start when defending his Phoenix Open title. Tournament chairman Pat Williams is excited for the quality field to tee off.

“With the WM Phoenix Open being named a designated event, we have high expectations for showcasing the best field we’ve ever had,”
“We can’t wait to introduce the rest of the field as we get closer to the 88th edition of ‘The People’s Open.’” Williams said in a release.
