July 14, 2024: A Historic Day for Spain

Today, July the 14th, 2024, will go down as one of the greatest days in Spain’s sports history as tennis news, Carlos Alcaraz won the Wimbledon gentlemen’s title in straight sets on Sunday. Hours later, Spain got a goal from Mikel Oyarzabal in the 86th minute of the UEFA Championship final to earn a 2-1 victory over England, marking Spain’s win in EURO 2024.

Oyarzabal, a substitute, received the ball from Marc Cucurella and beat Jordan Pickford. This marks the first major trophy for Spain’s men since their golden generation won the last of three consecutive titles in 2012. Spain’s fans erupted in celebration after the score.

The goal gave Spain the championship, and its name was engraved on the coveted trophy shortly thereafter, confirming that Spain wins EURO 2024.

In soccer news, the loss was the second straight UEFA final championship defeat for England.

Lucky Seven For Alcaraz, Spain

Spain’s run through the tournament emulated Alcaraz at Wimbledon. They both played seven matches and they each went through unscathed.

Spain had dominated a scoreless first half. It broke through on a goal by Nico Williams Jr in the 47th minute shortly after the break.

England Rallies to Tie

The England team turned up the pressure once trailing and struck suddenly. Cole Palmer drilled a shot into the net from just outside the box in the 73rd minute.

Yamale Plays Role in Opening Goal

Spain’s brilliant teenager, Lamine Yamale, who turned 17 on Saturday, set up the opening goal. Yamale delivered a brilliant assist to Williams Jr. Williams made no mistake as he gave Spain the lead.

Yamale was honored as the Best Young Player of the event.

Spain defeated England for the Women’s World Cup in 2023. Now, the men have done the same to England for the UEFA Championship. As Spain wins EURO 2024, they cement their legacy in international soccer.
